Ritu Kamath

Entangled Ecologies marks a significant new chapter in Ritu
Kamath’s artistic practice, expanding her ongoing exploration of nature into immersive
botanical landscapes that exist between observation, memory, and imagination.
Her paintings are not depictions of specific places but living ecosystems where
every vine, leaf, flower, and branch becomes part of an intricate visual
language. Part cultivated garden and part untamed wilderness, these works
celebrate nature as an interconnected web in which every element depends upon
another for survival.

Rendered through thousands of meticulously drawn lines,
Kamath’s monochromatic works possess an extraordinary meditative intensity. The
absence of colour directs attention to the rhythm of repetition, the delicate
architecture of foliage, and the slow, almost ritualistic process of
mark-making. Every leaf is indivisually articulated, every tendril carefully
traced, creating compositions that reward prolonged viewing. Rather than
presenting a singular focal point, the paintings invite the eye to wander
through dense networks of botanical forms, revealing new relationships and
hidden details with every encounter. They resemble imagined botanical
archives—part scientific illustration, part memory map—where biodiversity,
migration, and ecological histories quietly converge.

The exhibition also introduces a dramatic departure from her
predominantly black-and-white vocabulary through two monumental paintings.
These luminous works are inspired by the Parda Bel (Curtain Creeper), the
fast-growing evergreen vine whose cascading foliage forms natural green
curtains over walls and courtyards across the Indian landscape. Overflowing
with delicate yellow blossoms suspended amidst dense curtains of verdant
leaves, the paintings transform an everyday plant into a poetic meditation on
shelter, abundance, and belonging.

For Kamath, the Parda Bel carries a deeply personal
resonance. It recalls a long-held dream of a home embraced by nature, where
cascading vines soften the boundaries between architecture and landscape, creating
spaces of intimacy, shade, and quiet contemplation. The triptych captures this
imagined sanctuary with remarkable sensitivity, balancing botanical precision
with emotional memory. The cascading forms create a sense of movement and
immersion, drawing viewers into an environment that feels simultaneously
intimate and infinite.

Together, these works articulate Kamath’s enduring engagement
with ecology—not merely as an environmental concern, but as a philosophy of
coexistence. They remind us that nature thrives through connection, resilience,
and reciprocity, inviting reflection on our own place within these fragile yet
abundant living networks. The seminal Parda Bel triptych is poised to become
the centrepiece of Entangled Ecologies, embodying both the artist’s personal
vision and her broader meditation on the beauty, complexity, and vulnerability
of the natural world.
